In * Events, * Paley Festival & Paley Center, * TV Watchtower, Missing on April 12, 2012 at 1:00 pmKerry Washington Teases What’s Really Going On Behind-Closed-Doors on SCANDAL
In * Interviews, * TV Addict, * TV Watchtower, Scandal on April 12, 2012 at 12:55 pmThe ABC political drama series SCANDAL is about a political crisis management company, a.k.a. “fixers,” who work behind the scenes to make sure that the hot and juicy secrets of Washington, D.C.’s power-elite never see the light of day. Kerry Washington stars as Olivia Pope, the woman who has the ear of the President and who wields extraordinary power just because of who she knows. After last week’s debut episode, in an exclusive interview, Kerry teased what may or may not be really going on, particularly as to the insinuated relationship between Olivia Pope and President Fitz Grant.
With infidelity, particularly infidelity in politics, being such a hot-button, did you have any qualms in portraying a character willing to become a mistress, let alone a mistress to the President?
KERRY: I think there is still a lot to learn about the dynamic of what’s really going on. I’m always careful to remind people to stay-tuned ’cause everything is much more complicated than it appears. But, no. One of the things that I really love about Shonda’s work is that she is not afraid to go into the gray area. Sometimes we, as a people, want to paint a picture of human beings as either good or bad. We do it with characters. We do it with people. And I think Shonda understands that human beings are much more complicated than that. I think that’s admirable of her as an artist, to be willing to go into the gray area.
Do you think that there are no limits to the lengths Olivia will go to protect her secret relationship, of whatever kind it is, with President Grant?
KERRY: I think again that’s a good question. I think you’ll learn more about that as the season goes on. I’m so sorry! It’s a difficult thing. I think one of the most exciting things about the show is that you think you really know. Even from here, I think it would be easy to think, “Well, I know what next week must be about.” Even close friends of mine, who have seen the second episode, they keep saying “oh, I know.” You think you know thematically or at least structurally what next week’s episode is going to be and yet you have no idea.
So about Quinn, can you share why Olivia thought she needed Quinn to be involved and a part her team. It seemed like there was a big push to bring Quinn in, yet we’re not sure why?
KERRY: Yeah, and you’re not supposed to be! Trust me if you were supposed to understand that, you would. [Laughter]
Does Olivia see her team as her quasi-family or are they more her tools to accomplish her professional goals?
KERRY: No. I spent a lot of time with Judy Smith, who inspired the show and I should say the show is inspired by Judy but is not based on Judy because Judy did work in the first Bush White House — but she did not have a complicated relationship with that President. Her work life is a real inspiration for the show. She actually has a new book out called, “Good Self, Bad Self.” One of the things that I learned is that the thing that distinguishes her, in my opinion, from a lot of other people who do this kind of work is that she has this inherent real desire to take care of people. She has this very compassionate spirit and she really wants people to be okay, and that’s why she “fixes” things. Judy is somebody who fixes things for her clients, but she also fixes things for the person who is standing in line behind her in Starbucks. She just can’t help herself. And I think the thing that is true for Olivia and the people that work in her office, she really cares about them and part of the reason that they work at Pope and Associates is part of the reason they are good at what they do — and you’ll learn this as the season unfolds, that they all have their own experience with crisis. They all know what it’s like to have a seemingly worst-day-of-your-life. So when a new client walks in the office they know how to approach the situation with a level of compassion. I think Olivia cares very deeply for them and really respects their talent.
For the characters on the show, do you think they are adrenaline-junkies and are drawn to living amongst this high-pressure and in-the-fire kind of situation all the time, or is it more like you were pointing out that they are more empathetic and compassionate because of their own personal experiences?
KERRY: I think it’s more complicated than that. But I don’t think these characters are adrenaline-junkies. I think they are incredibly passionate about what they do. They are “gladiators” in suits. They need to win, no question about it. But it’s not coming from a place of ego or empty chasing of a rush. I think they really do want to help. They’re in this game because they believe that people deserve a second chance. That if somebody is willing to be accountable and take responsibility and own up to what they’ve done, then that person deserves a shot at being a better version of themselves.
Now that we’ve met Amanda, the presidential intern who allegedly had the affair with President Grant, is the revelation that such a thing could have happened something that shatters Olivia’s world or is it just another crisis for her?
KERRY: I would hope that in watching the episode that it’s a little more complicated than it being just another crisis. I hope that was clear emotionally.
Do you think Amanda is going to become a thorn in Olivia’s side or is she going to think “this is just another job, I’m totally cool with it”?
KERRY: I think you’ll learn more about that as the weeks progress. [Laughter]
How will it change Olivia’s relationship with Fitz? Obviously this wasn’t something she saw coming and it might be a real breaking point for them. It’s definitely put some strain on their relationship.
KERRY: I feel so badly because I can’t answer these questions! So much of this show is about the unraveling of what is going on for these people and I don’t want to ruin it for you. That would take the fun out of it. [Laughter]
Okay, here’s a safer question, how much fun was it working with such a wide array of guest stars, such as Josh Malina and Brendan Hines and a bunch of other recognizable actors from other great shows?
KERRY: I keep saying, quite honestly, that on a show like ours — especially a show like this — the guest stars make the show because its a ridiculous ensemble cast. It’s phenomenal. And Josh is actually in every single episode. I’m not sure you can call him a guest star even though he’s credited that way. But the people on this show — people come to Pope & Associates on what feels like the absolute worst day of their lives — so the actors that come on as guest stars, they have to bring a level of intensity in order to make our ability to fix a situation look real. So it was tremendous to be able to work with the caliber of actors that were coming in every week. People who upped our game.
To find out just how salacious and scandalous things are going to be revealed, tune in for an all new episode of SCANDAL on Thursday, April 12th at 10:00 p.m. on ABC. If you think the second episode has your ears burning and your mind buzzing, wait until the third episode! Wow!

Celebrating a Growing Comedy For Families Everywhere: ABC’s THE MIDDLE
In * Events, * Interviews, * Showcases, * TV Addict, * TV Watchtower, The Middle on April 11, 2012 at 2:00 pmShows that exemplify the “everyman” do not actually come around that often. But one wonderful and warm exception is ABC’s comedy series THE MIDDLE. Rather than depict a super-human family genetically engineered to accomplish their life’s bliss, THE MIDDLE recognizes and celebrates the kind of family that most of us probably have – one where money is tight, the children are a shade off from “normal,” and yet everyone undeniably loves each other through the thick-and-thin — and more often than not, finds a way to make lemonade when handed a basket of lemons. In fact, THE MIDDLE seeks to cherish and commemorate what makes being a family a special joy in today’s world of everyday stress, pressure and worries.
At a special event in its honor at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the cast and creators of THE MIDDLE stopped to chat about their family-friendly show.
PATRICIA HEATON:
NEIL FLYNN:
CHARLIE MCDERMOTT:
EDEN SHER:
ATTICUS SHAFFER:
Creators/producers EILEEN HEISLER and DEANNE HELINE:
Infused with equal parts comedy and love for its characters – and a healthy doses of love spread amongst the characters, THE MIDDLE reminds us that it is okay to be a family struggling through the mundane and normal aspects of our lives. It also highlights how what can been seen as a “normal” day, can be simply extraordinary. With our lives rushing by, it is hard to see how special such days can be and how they will leave imprints in our souls for the rest of our lives.
If you have not yet taken the time to meet The Hecks, you absolutely should take a peek on Wednesday nights. It will give you a chance to meet Frankie Heck, as hilariously portrayed by Patricia Heaton. Frankie gives new meaning to the “super mom” as she tries to balance work, motherhood and a moment for herself in our modern lives. Fortunately, to her three children, Frankie is a super-hero all on her own. They may not always verbalize their appreciation, but the undercurrent of affection is always there.
Frankie’s kids are Axl, Sue and Brick. Portraying these wildly different, and at times precocious (well, that may just apply to Brick), characters are Charlie McDermott, Eden Sher and Atticus Shaffer. Each has the fun task of finding the “heart” in their diverse characters and who bring more than meets-the-eye layers to each. Then adding the final piece to the puzzle is Michael, Frankie’s husband. Deftly and humorously portrayed by Neil Flynn, Michael is not just the dad coming home from work and tuning out his kids. Each one of the characters has a vital role in their family as they balance and conquer their every day lives. Life may not be easy, but they have figured out the secret of how to enjoy their lives and be a content family together. The Hecks may not be picture-perfect, but they are perfectly happy just as they are and we love them for it.
Join in the celebration of life on THE MIDDLE, which airs Wednesday nights at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.

From CASTLE to BONES: Is the MOONLIGHTING Curse Still Relevant Today?
In * Opinion columns, * TV Addict, * TV Watchtower, Castle on April 10, 2012 at 2:05 pmIn Hollywood, there is no more dreaded catch phrase than “The Moonlighting Curse.” For those old enough to remember, MOONLIGHTING was the hot comedy-drama of the 1980’s, starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis. The show consistently scored high ratings until one disastrous night – its core characters David and Maddie slept together at the end of the show’s third season. After achieving its highest ratings ever, it was all downhill from there – at least in the ratings.
MOONLIGHTING went from 9thplace the Nielsen list to 14th place during its next season, and then was cancelled after limping through one more final season. Ever since then, shows that are dependent on the “will they or won’t they” hooks to their premise religiously avoid killing the cash-cow and make sure their hot couples never get together, or to postpone it as long as humanly possible (such as waiting until the series finale). The thought being that popping the “romantic-tension bubble” spells doom for any television show.
Yet, there were a combination of factors that are conveniently forgotten when alluding to “The Moonlighting Curse.” For one, Cybill Shepherd was pregnant with twins that following season and was unable to work as much as she had before. In addition, there were cost and scheduling overruns that made the show extremely expensive. So the show was headed for trouble whether or not its characters ever slept together and became romantically involved, simply due to a collision of outside factors. Yet all the audience remembers, and which is now a part of Hollywood lore, is that popping the “romantic-tension bubble” will kill a show.
So for the past two decades, everyone has shuddered to imagine what would happen to a TV show if a show allowed its principal couple to take their relationship to the next level. Daring to flip-the-bird at the alleged “curse,” showrunner and creator Hart Hanson allowed his show’s core characters of Brennan and Booth to consummate their relationship and have a child together on BONES. It may have seemed risky, but with BONES heading into its 7th season, the risk was nominal. Its core fanbase and popularity was rock-solid. In fact, the ratings barely registered a blip as a result. (Though the recent move to Mondays has put the show in the ratings spotlight as it is so much harder to secure an audience on Monday nights versus Thursday nights — perhaps explaining why it feels so gun-shy about the “curse.”)
Despite Hart Hanson’s fortitude and willingness to “go there,” not every show currently on television is ready to tackle the “curse.” One good example is the detective series CASTLE. (It is also noteworthy that BONES airs on Fox, whereas CASTLE airs on ABC, the same network that MOONLIGHTING was broadcast.)
On CASTLE, for the better part of four seasons, the show has danced around the romantic-tension between Detective Kate Beckett and Richard Castle. The dance has been fantastically drawn-out and has left fans panting with anticipation. So much so that last season, in an episode where Detectives Ryan and Esposito were kidnapped, Beckett and Castle posed as a couple on a date and shared a passionate kiss. Better make that two passionate kisses. Rewatch that scene, you’ll see exactly what I mean! (See my article “CASTLE: A Kiss Is Never Just A Kiss”.) Anyway, that kiss and the lingering tension finally culminated in last season’s finale with Castle declaring his love to Becket when she was shot by a sniper. So when the show returned for its fourth season, fans were anxious to see how Beckett would respond. But for the better part of this current season, all those feelings were left unsatisfied and unresolved as Beckett proclaimed that she did not remember anything after she was shot that fateful day. It was not until the recent episode “47 Seconds” that we found out that Beckett had lied about that. She remembered everything and had not said a word to Castle. Once Richard Castle found out that she remembered his declaration of love but had never said anything, he felt embarrassed and a fool. He had continued loving Kate while she had tried to pretend that his declaration had never happened. It has forced the characters to veer off in wildly tangent directions as Castle attempts to move on in his life, which Beckett has noticed and may be attempting to move on herself. The characters seem to be moving on – or are they?
Rumors have abounded. The cast and creator Andrew Marlowe have teased. Previews have shown Beckett regretting not telling Castle sooner that she knew he loves her. Will there be a final culmination of the détente of “will they or won’t they”? Will it finally end? And if it does, will it be a ratings “death knell”?
20 years has passed since the demise of MOONLIGHTING. Isn’t it time to stop fearing the myth of such an old “curse” when characters come together romantically? In the intervening years, so many more shows have avoided the “curse” by simply having their characters connect romantically right away. One good example is USA Network’s BURN NOTICE. From the very first episode, Fiona and Michael have been a couple and it has only fueled the fiery passion of both the series and the fans’ amorous love for the show. Frankly, BURN NOTICE would have suffered greatly but for the sexy hot relationship of Michael and Fiona. Another USA Network series that has not hesitated to taunt the “curse” is PSYCH. In a fun turn of events, in the show’s fifth season, it allowed Detective Juliet O’Hara and fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer to have a romantic relationship, which delightfully continues through the show’s sixth season. In fact, a large number of today’s current television shows have avoided the “curse” successfully and have allowed their characters to enjoy wonderful romantic relationships, such as COUGAR TOWN, WHITE COLLAR, NIKITA, GRIMM, FRINGE, THE FINDER, THE SECRET CIRCLE, GREY’S ANATOMY, ROYAL PAINS, GLEE, LOST GIRL, GOSSIP GIRL, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, HOUSE. Even shows like THE GOOD WIFE and ONCE UPON A TIME have briefly allowed their core characters a chance at happiness.
The old adage that for “will they or won’t they” type shows that they will wither and die should they burst the “romantic-tension bubble” seems to be crumbling and falling by the wayside as more and more television shows are discovering that audiences and fans are more than willing to allow their favorite couples to explore romantic love.
After all, what is more intoxicating than watching people who are in love? Looking across the television landscape, there seem to be more shows than ever before that have broken the “curse.” There is love blossoming all around.
While there will always be a few hold-out shows that are fearful of “The Moonlighting Curse” and who continue their dance around their core couple (HART OF DIXIE, JANE BY DESIGN, COVERT AFFAIRS, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and SUITS), we remain hopeful and confident that the day those show’s writers decide it is time to take the leap that we will be on the other side to catch them.
Until then, rest assured that the “curse” is only as powerful as writers chose to believe it is – for as ONCE UPON A TIME has taught us, “true love’s kiss” can break any curse.

Jumping Right Into the World of SCANDAL: Your New Favorite Guilty Pleasure
In * Interviews, * Showcases, * TV Addict, * TV Watchtower, * Video interviews, Scandal on April 5, 2012 at 2:00 pmMake no mistake about it, SCANDAL is a television show worth your time. Airing Thursday nights at 10 p.m., you may think that it deserves a slot on your DVR. Yet I encourage you to watch it live; the reason being that this show delivers some really juicy and fun stories that deserve to be savored as soon as possible. Coming from creator Shonda Rhimes, SCANDAL delivers. It knows exactly how to capture an audience’s attention and keep it.
The show is premised on a “dream team” of political fixers that move behind the scenes in Washington, D.C. to ensure that scandals that would destroy political careers are kept safely buried, never to see the light of day. Helmed by Olivia Pope (portrayed with scintillating precision and grace by Kerry Washington), her office champions anyone and everyone who is on the verge of being caught in a scandalous-web; whether it be the President of the United States, a notorious D.C. madam, a son of a wealthy politician charged with a sex crime, or an aide who finds herself caught in the cross-hairs of political intrigue.
SCANDAL echoes of its famous television predecessors, invoking nostalgia for shows like THE WEST WING, especially with its rich hues and visual texture. In fact, the visual palette and setting make the SCANDAL-world all the more real. If Washington, D.C.’s hallowed halls were as luxurious and wealth-infused as portrayed, one would never want to leave.
The show also spares no expense to each and every word of dialogue. The rapid-fire exchanges convey not only practical information for each case as it is discovered, but ratchets up the tension-filled environment in which the SCANDAL fixers live and breathe. Time is of the essence and every second counts. Thus, the pace of the show is an adrenaline-rush as these “gladiators” work frantically to keep political scandals from exploding.
In addition to Kerry Washington, who plays the enigmatic Olivia Pope, co-starring are Katie Lowes, Columbus Short, Guillermo Diaz and Darby Stanchfield as her team of “fixers.” In a recent press conference, these “gladiators” shared some fun insight as to their characters and where the series is headed in its first 7 episodes:
Then at the recent Academy of Television Arts & Sciences event “An Evening With Shonda Rhimes & Friends,” creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes, and castmembers Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn and Katie Lowes shared what makes the SCANDAL characters more mysterious than the cases they work on:
Kerry Washington:
Tony Goldwyn:
Katie Lowes:
Shonda Rhimes:
As the cast have cryptically revealed, SCANDAL is not just a show about the scandal-of-the-week cases – but rather the mystery of what each of the characters have to hide. There is a reason that Olivia Pope chose her “dream team” – each has something special to offer and each has a secret they are desperate to protect themselves.
Washington, D.C. as a backdrop for a story about how everyone has secrets and the lengths they will go to in order to protect those secrets is alluring. Politics is not about simply eliminating threats, it is about burying them – and murder is not always the best option, nor the most effective.
It is time to make SCANDAL appointment-television and discover what delicious, dirty secrets everyone has to hide. SCANDAL premieres Thursday, April 5th at 10:00 p.m. on ABC.

A Peek Into Shondaland: Interviews with Cast and Creator About GREY’S ANATOMY
In * Events, * Interviews, * Showcases, * TV Addict, * TV Watchtower, * Video interviews, Grey's Anatomy on April 5, 2012 at 1:00 pmIt is a rare treat when once can catch castmembers from one of television’s hottest shows and find out their thoughts on their increasingly complicated characters. One such opportunity was at “An Evening With Shonda Rhimes & Friends” at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, where creator/producer Shonda Rhimes and cast members Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh chatted briefly about what they foresee in the future for their characters as the 8th season of rushes towards its climatic season finale.
Ellen Pompeo:
Sandra Oh:
Shonda Rhimes:
While the cast are understandably cautious about revealing any real spoilers lest they invoke the ire of their illustrious creator who was standing nearby, Ellen and Sandra were clearly ecstatic to continue portraying their complex characters for the foreseeable future. (Nudge: Are those contract negotiations finalized yet?!)
Life is changing for the residents of Seattle Grace. With the residents facing their “Boards” and the daunting task of finally becoming board-certified in their specialty areas, the stress does not end with just passing an exam. Next comes the more tricky decision of where to practice. Not everyone can stay at Seattle Grace, nor just walk into a waiting position in their specialty. That means that board certification may open new doors to opportunities far outside the Seattle area for doctors in search of homes for their practices.
For characters like Meredith and Cristina, there is a whole wide world out there. Are they content to stay close to their makeshift “home” because of the friendships and relationships they have fostered and forged over the past eight years? Or are they just waiting for the chance to venture out and explore new opportunities? It is not only their careers and callings that they must heed, but also their marital relationships and family obligations. Meredith and Cristina have both gotten married, and Meredith now has a daughter, Zola, who she must also consider. Those significant ties are things that may stop one or both from just moving away too quickly. Plus, what would become of Meredith and Cristina if they did not have each other to help get through the tough times?
Regardless of whether they successfully conquer their “Boards,” the real challenge will be deciding the next chapter of their lives. With GREY’S ANATOMY itself on the verge of a pivotal season finale, we hold our breaths to find out what lies ahead for all the Seattle Grace characters. Keep your fingers-crossed, things are about to get interesting!
GREY’S ANATOMY returns with 7 more episodes this season on Thursday, April 5th at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.

MISSING Executive Producer Gregory Poirier Talks Upcoming Twists and Big Reveals
In * Interviews, * TV Addict, * TV Watchtower, Missing on March 29, 2012 at 2:00 pmThe new ABC drama series MISSING follows a mother who finds out her son has been kidnapped while studying abroad. Fortunately, for her son, Becca Winstone is ex-CIA and nothing is going to stop her from finding her son and making the people responsible for his abduction pay. With two episodes having aired so far and eight more to go, MISSING is building into a fascinating mystery story as there seems to be more going on than a simple kidnapping. Somehow Becca’s past with the agency may have provoked the events that are happening today. In a special exclusive interview, producer and writer Gregory Poirier shared a few key insights on what is upcoming on this intriguing series.
MISSING seems to be doing quite well right now, as the audience seems to be picking up on it for the 8 p.m. timeslot on Thursdays.
GREGORY: That’s amazing because it’s such a difficult time. Obviously, it is probably the toughest timeslot on television. But we’ve been very lucky that everyone found it.
It’s a story that resonates, particularly as parents are concerned about their children traveling abroad these days. So it is very timely. Could you share how you got involved with this project?
GREGORY: I was lucky. I was approached by my co-executive producers, Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo. Gina had this idea and she actually had thought it through quite a bit by the time she contacted me. She basically had the idea of this woman whose son disappears and she goes looking for him. She essentially had the entire first act of the pilot figured out by the time I came to meet her about it. That was great. As to what drew me to it? It really was the emotional story that’s being told. It was not so much the opportunity to blow things up and run around Europe — although that’s all great! But, for me, it was the family story, the emotional story that she had laid the groundwork for and that’s what sucked me in.
For you, what was the best part about working on this series for the first season?
GREGORY: That’s really hard to say. I mean, from a perspective of a writer, the greatest thing about it was the freedom. You have to spend more time with these characters. Because I’ve only done features in the past in which you have to take your characters throughout an entire arc or journey in an hour and a half, the idea of having all this extra time to deal with these characters was really appealing to me. It turned out to be one of the great joys from a writer’s perspective. As a producer, just being able to travel around Europe and going to all these beautiful places and working with all these great people. I mean, our cast is amazing. We got people you just don’t get for TV shows. So that was a real pleasure. There was no downside to this, I have to say. It was fun all the way through.
You did get a remarkable cast put together for this show. How did that happen? It was cool to see Ashley Judd’s name associated with it, but then as you start watching the series, you think, “oh my gosh, I recognize a lot of film actors.”
GREGORY: A lot of that is because of Ashley. Ashley was sort of the linchpin to this whole thing. She was honestly the piece we never thought we’d get. We always dreamed of getting Ashley for this. But she sort of has a reputation for turning everything down in television and we never really thought it would happen. Then when it did, it just opened up for the rest of it. Then you can talk to people like Sean Bean, Adriano Giannini, and Cliff Curtis and say, ” Ashley’s in it.” That sort of changes the landscape ’cause all of a sudden everyone wants to be in it. But even our guest stars — like Joaquim de Almeida in Episode 2 — and with all kinds of amazing guest stars like Keith Carradine. It just really worked out well.
Since you brought up Keith Carradine, I am dying to know: Is Keith going to have an expanded storyline? He’s had such minimal screentime so far. Is he going to play a larger part?
GREGORY: Yeah, it’s so funny because we have a couple of great actors in the pilot that are in it for about 3 seconds. I was joking with Keith and he said, “Oh my god, people are going to look at that and think ‘poor Keith Carradine, what’s happened to his career to take a walk on part?’” and I said, “No, no, no. We’re going tell people, ‘That’s all we can afford of Keith Carradine.’” The truth is we have a lot of Keith Carradine coming up. He just happened to just be layered in there in the pilot. He’s an integral part of the show.
Another thing I’m curious about is we’ve only seen 2 episodes, and the third episode might be change point for this, but there seems to be a lack of strategy and a lot of reactionary stance as far as the story. Is there going to be a strategy developed to derail or trap these kidnappers?
GREGORY: Yes. It actually becomes much more [strategized]. It’s reactionary all the way through in a sense that there’s a mystery that she’s trying to solve. It never becomes “Death Wish” where she’s going around trying to kill everybody that took her kid. It remains a mystery, but it becomes much more active in the sense of her sort of taking the reins. In fact at the end of Episode 3 Becca gets a piece of information that really leads her somewhere in the mystery and she becomes much more active in chasing down the kidnappers.
It seems like that would be something vital for her — to stop just chasing the kidnappers and find a way to trap them.
GREGORY: Exactly. But I think there’s an emotional shift she has to make. She has to sort of realize that. Giancarlo sort of said it to her in the second episode, “You have to stop thinking like a mom, and you have to start thinking like you’re looking for another missing asset. That’s the only way you’re going to find him.” I think it takes Becca awhile for her to really get to that point. But once she does, her search becomes more practical.
Is there something you can share about going to all these different European cities? Is it just a chase kind of thing, or is there actual meaning behind each city?
GREGORY: There is. Through the flashbacks you start to see that all these cities tie in with Becca’s past. There are things that might have happened with her that led to this kidnapping in the present. So the cities become a part of that. We tried to make it so that while we are going around to all these different places, it’s not just a travel log. We really wanted it to have a feel as to why we were in all these different places. That each stop we made had a story reason for being there as opposed to just being there.
Thus are the cities a clue in and of themselves?
GREGORY: Yeah, in some ways. Especially further down in the show. Obviously Becca went to Rome because that’s where her son was and the trail led to Paris. But as the show starts to go on, Becca has more concrete reasons for each place that she goes.
Will the 10-year gap be explained if all these are things that are arising out of her past?
GREGORY: Definitely. We’ll explain all that. I’d love to say. Obviously I can’t answer all these questions, but by the end of this season, all your questions will be answered. It’s not one of those shows where you’ll get to the end and go, “Oh god, I don’t know anymore now than I did before.”
That’s hopeful! Maybe you could tease a little bit about what’s coming up for the next couple of episodes, “Ice Queen” and “Tell Me No Lies.”
GREGORY: I can tell you that in “Ice Queen” — one of the cool things about “Ice Queen” is that it’s an episode where we start to follow Michael’s story, rather than just following Becca’s. So we actually find out in Episode 3 — well, we don’t know exactly where he is — but you see where he is, we see whose got him, and we see what he’s going through on a daily basis as he tries to figure out all this too. So that’s one of the coolest things about it. And I can tell you that in Episode 4 there is a major, major twist, which will sort of turning everything on its head that you think you might have figured out already.
We love those actually!
GREGORY: But I can’t tell you what that is. [Laughter]
So what would you say are like little clues or visual things that people should pay attention to as they watch these episodes?
GREGORY: I would say pay attention to everything. Because we hide things in there that you may not even realize until you see it the second time or after the fact and you’ll realize that’s why that was in there. But there’s little clues as to who has him and why in every single episode — and they’re not even always things that Becca sees until later. But they are always there. I think it’s one of those shows where you need to pay attention. I hate to say that about a TV show, but it’s true.
With the tantalizing prospect of finding out what is really going on and what big twist lies ahead, be sure to tune in for MISSING on Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.
