This was an excellent post. I do think that Elena is becoming an adult and soon she may realise that Stefan was simply her first love, not the guy she’s meant to spend the rest of her life with. I do see something in her relationship with Elijah, hopefully he’ll come back in future episodes and the writers will explore that.

This is an excellent point. I keep forgetting that one critical element — that it has to be a supernatural death. So here’s to hoping that Meredith has some handy vampire blood nearby to help poo Alaric out.

The ring only prevents death due to a supernatural being. Meredith is probably a human, which means that Alaric could conceivably die.
