A Sneak Peek at USA Network’s New Series “Necessary Roughness”

In Necessary Roughness, NiceGirlsTV, TV Watchtower on June 28, 2011 at 9:00 pm

In one of the more compelling and intriguing new shows this summer, USA Network debuts its new series “Necessary Roughness” on Wednesday, June 29th.  The 90-minute premiere takes viewers into an interesting menagerie of worlds.  It brings the world of a psychotherapist into direct contact with the high octane world of sports professionals and other competitive careers, such as politicians and television anchors — all who unknowingly need her assistance to get their personal lives back on track so they do not permanently derail their professional lives.

Unfortunately, as Dr. Dani Santino’s own personal life blows-up, her professional life takes off and it becomes a struggle to balance it all.  But it also makes her the perfect person to know exactly what her patients are going through.  Not willing to watch a person of any stature go it on their own when they are in need of her help, Dr. Dani finds a way to make it all work.

Played by Callie Thorne (known for her stellar work on “Rescue Me”), Dani Santino is not just a woman on the verge, she is a full-fledged human being.  She is a wife scorned, a mother at wits end, a friend at sea, and yet an unfailing and unflinching source of strength for her family and her patients.

The delicate dance of tenacity and determination as her personal and professional lives collide, Dani is simply riveting to watch.  Callie Thorne makes her addictive and real.

It simply must be seen to be believed.  But trust me when I say, just watch the premiere and you too will feel the magnetic pull of such an extraordinary show with its fascinating characters.  Adding to the stellar cast are Marc Blucas, Scott Cohen, Mehcad Brooks, Patrick Johnson and Hannah Marks, with special appearances by Craig Bierko and Amanda Detmer.

Marc Blucas portrays the new love-interest and facilitator for connecting Dani to her new clientele.  Scott Cohen portrays the “fixer” who makes sure that the clients actually make their appointments with Dani and stay out of the tabloids as much as possible.  Mehcad Brooks portrays TK, the angry, wayward football star that helps Dani make her mark in the competitive world of sports therapy.  Then Patrick Johnson and Hannah Marks portray Dani Santiano’s teenage children, who bring their own set of turbulent issues into the Santino household.  Craig Bierko is the philandering ex-husband and Amanda Detmer is Dani’s best friend.  With such a rich palate of characters populating Dani’s life, the complex and entangled relationships provide a fun intersection with her new professional world.  Life is not about compartmentalizing our lives.  It is about navigating through all facets of our lives — even when they get messy and intertwined.  And for Dr. Dani — she makes it even more mesmerizing.

So do not be fooled by all the commercials and promos, this is not a show strictly about football.  It is about an unusual world where high level professionals need a bit of a nudge to help get their lives back on track and Dr. Dani is the person to get them there.  Seeing how this all comes together and makes for an addictive television series is amazing.  Be sure to tune in for the 90-minute premiere of “Necessary Roughness” on Wednesday, June 29th at 10:00 p.m. on USA Network.

A Look at the Magnificent Second Season of “Stargate Universe”

In NiceGirlsTV, Stargate Universe on June 6, 2011 at 2:00 pm

Every once in a while a show comes along and avoids the sophomore slump by knocking down the walls of expectations and takes viewers on an astounding journey.  “Stargate Universe” is that show.  Stepping outside the long shadows of its predecessors, “Stargate Universe” sought to explore how a small group of mixed military and civilians stranded on the far side of the universe on an alien ship out of their control chose to embrace their destiny (interestingly, the very name of the alien ship) and see where it took them.  It became less about the need to return home and more about seeing what their journey ahead held.

Jumping right off from where Season One had left them amidst an insurrection by the Lucian Alliance, Season Two showed the violent aftermath of the standoff with both sides sustaining losses and casualties.  It was only by working together that the bloody siege ended and life aboard the ship Destiny slowly came together again — albeit with some new faces, boiling tensions, and mistrust on all sides.

With everyone distracted by the simmering feud and uneasy truce, Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) made a remarkable discovery about the ship and kept it a secret for his own purposes.  As the remainder of the season unfolded, everyone seemed to have a secret — some benign, some nefarious and some just out of curiosity or fear.  But crammed together on one starship, there is not much room for secrets.  It is out of pure necessity that everyone’s secrets came to light.  Rush was not able to keep secret the fact that he had found the control bridge of Destiny and could now direct the ship.  Chloe (Elyse Levesque) could not keep secret her growing alien infection.  Eli (David Blue) could not keep secret his feelings for one of the Lucians.  Just as secrets can erode trust and instill fear, secrets can be used as weapons.

So the second season continued down a murky path as the Destiny-ites sought not only to survive, but to also overcome their own personal insecurities and forge bonds that would ultimately provide the foundation of perhaps a future civilization.

However, during these interpersonal and internal battles, there were also threats at home on Earth and from aliens seeking to destroy the Destiny-ites at every turn. There were the relentless Berzerker drones that lie-in-wait at each of the possible refueling and supply planets where Destiny may take them — and since the drones are robotic machines, they cannot be reasoned with.  It was kill or be killed.  There were the Ursini who came to aid the Destiny-ites in fending off the drones. And finally, there were the mysterious blueberry aliens that would pop up with their own hidden agenda, such as when they kidnapped Chloe and performed mind experiments on her and Dr. Rush. As the clock ticked down, the blue aliens’ true motivation became clear as they sought to capture the valuable Destiny ship to unlock its powerful secrets; and who ultimately demanded the Destiny-ites surrender or die.

Life on the outer edge of the universe, millions upon millions of miles from home, it is survival of the fittest and this rag-tag of survivors were utterly alone in fending off alien attacks, foraging for food and fuel, and just making it day to day.  It was bleak, harsh and utterly gripping to see how survival was even possible without succumbing to desperation, fear and futility.  Yet, as “Stargate Universe” showed in its second season, the human spirit is resilient, creative and determined to survive, believing: if we have but one life to live, we must live it to the fullest.

As the second season wrapped, the Destiny-ites encountered their descendants from an alternate timeline after they had traveled down a wormhole.  It allowed them to see one possible version of their future and how generations upon generations of future space explorers would undertake their mission to explore the universe.

But it also fueled their desire to not only explore, but also to one day still find a way to return to Earth.  Exploration is fun, but the chance to go home is a powerful motivator.  With one last leap into the unknown and allowing Eli Wallace the chance to be the hero he was born to be, the Destiny-ites chose to spend years in cryogenic hibernation until they could get to a safe place to begin their journey again.  It is a fitting and fulfilling ending to a series that challenged viewers to join it on a remarkable adventure.

For those wanting to see how this fine sci-fi series played out, the entire second season will be released on DVD on June 7th by MGM Home Entertainment.  The 5-disc DVD set includes all 20 episodes of the final season, including behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast, featurettes showcasing the mysteries of Destiny, audio commentary by both cast and the producers for each episode and sneak peeks into the sensational season finale.  Also among the featurettes are: SG-U Welcomes You to New Mexico’s Bisti Badlands (an in-depth piece about the filming in New Mexico for the episode “Malice”); Pitches: A Journey of Friendship and Discovery (a piece that showcases the development of an episode from ideation to screenplay), Robert Carlyle Directs; Andy Mikita Directs;·Eli’s Mom Comes on Board; Brian J. Smith’s First Fight; Crashing a Shuttle; The Seed Ship with Joe Mallozzi; Saying Goodbye to Sgt. Riley; Lou Diamond Phillips on Guest Stars; Lt. Scott Gets Hit By A Car; Inside Cloverdale with Brad Wright; How to Get Sucked Into Space; Deconstructing Destiny;· A Day in the Life of Jamil Walker Smith; Transplant Day; Sitting Down with Mike Dopud; Bringing the Bridge to Life; Louis Ferreira vs. Colonel Young; and Behind the Season 2 Finale – Gauntlet.

The series starred Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira, David Blue, Brian J. Smith, Jamil Walker Smith, Ming Na, and Alaina Huffman, with special appearances by Lou Diamond Phillips and Robert Knepper. Their mesmerizing performances made the second season of “Stargate Universe” simply extraordinary.  It simply must be seen to be believed.  For sci-fi fans, for Stargate fans, and fans of well-crafted television stories, this is a must watch show.  Take the journey with them and be amazed!

Getting to know Maxim Knight, one of the stars of TNT’s hot new sci-fi series “Falling Skies”

In Falling Skies, Interviews, NiceGirlsTV, TV Watchtower on June 2, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Maxim Knight of "Falling Skies"

While TNT has yet to debut the much-anticipated alien invasion series “Falling Skies” (which premieres June 19th), one of its young actors is already making a big name for himself.  Maxim Knight may only be 11 years old, but to date he has co-starred in 15 films and guest-starred in numerous television shows.  Being an avid thespian since the age of 7, Maxim has worked diligently to score the best roles around.   Thus, he was thrilled to get the opportunity to play Matt Mason on “Falling Skies.”

Playing the youngest son of Noah Wylie’s character, Tom Mason, it is Maxim’s role to embody all that the human survivors are fighting for – the hope of humanity — the children; particularly since innocence lost is a delicate subject that is addressed carefully in the show.  In fact, Maxim described his character Matt as an “old soul.”   He sees Matt’s role is to give his father and his brothers a reason to fight.  Thus, describing his character in one word Maxim said, “He represents ‘hope’  — Matt gives his father the inspiration to fight.”  In a world where everything seems lost, the invaders have destroyed their lives and are hunting them to the ends of the Earth; hope is all they have left.  So Maxim knows he plays a vital part on the show and it makes him proud.

In addition, working on “Falling Skies” has been a really great experience for Maxim.  It felt like a family and he made some great friends because of it, including Connor Jessup, who plays Matt’s brother Ben on the show.  For Maxim, that was the best part of working on “Falling Skies” – hanging out with everyone.  He had a wonderful time and loved every minute of it.  Naturally, he is looking forward to returning to his “Falling Skies” family and working with them again in Toronto should TNT renew the show for a second season.

Sharing a bit about his co-stars, Noah Wylie who plays his father and Drew Roy who plays his brother on “Falling Skies,” Maxim said he loved how Noah kept the set a really happy place for everyone and he loved seeing how gracious Drew Roy was with his “Hannah Montana” fans who showed up to watch them film.  Both Noah and Drew set a great example and he appreciated the chance to work with them.

Maxim also noted that one of the cooler aspects of “Falling Skies” is the Skitters, the creepy, multi-legged aliens that have taken over the planet.  For Maxim, he loved how scary and realistic the Skitters appeared.  While there is some CGI used, the Skitters are actual costumed cast and very life-like.  So, for Maxim, the Skitters were scary even before the CGI effects were added.  He loved that the creatures came across so real and would love to work more on screen with the Skitters next season.

As far as what Maxim wants fans to know about “Falling Skies,” he thought it was important to consider the show from the viewpoint:  ”What would you do if Earth was destroyed and had to start over? What would you do?”  If you look at it that way, it is easier to relate to what Matt, his father and his brothers are going throughMaxim also shared that besides the great special effects and scary aliens, there will be a wide range of emotions illustrated by the different circumstances of the survivors: joy, empathy, devastation, romance, etc.; so he believes the show will appeal to a variety of viewers.

Being a bit of an “old soul” himself, when asked what would be the one thing he would probably take in the event of an alien invasion or apocalypse, Maxim said he would his family photos.  To him, “Memories are the most precious thing.”

Not slowing down for one second, while on break between “Falling Skies” season one and two, Maxim has taken the time to hone his creative acting chops, which includes a guest appearance on the new series “Wilfred” which stars Elijah Wood and Jason Gann.  It was an extraordinary experience since Maxim looks up to both actors and it was a really fun and different role for him.

However, for now, Maxim is counting the days until he can hopefully return to working on “Falling Skies.”  He is anxious to jump into the thick of it and hopefully get to be a part of the action if and when the second season is ordered – particularly as a number of the children in the show have are being recruited to help fight in the resistance.  However, he insightfully noted that while his character Matt may think he is old enough to use a gun, he actually isn’t.  So Maxim is curious how that will inherent tension will work out — and he would love to do more scenes with the Skitters. He also humorously added that one of the biggest challenges he foresees returning to the role of Matt is, “I had to remember what it was like to be 8, and how innocent and naïve my thoughts and actions had to be – because I was 8 THREE WHOLE YEARS AGO!”  So to be 11 portraying and 8 year old is indeed a bit harder than he expected.

Finally, Maxim encourages everyone to check out “Falling Skies” when it debuts on June 19th on TNT with its 2-hour premiere and to keep tuning in to see the incredible story that plays out.  He also invites fans to watch for his fun upcoming appearance on “Wilfred,” which is likely to surprise a few people.

Maxim Knight – an actor whose career you should be watching.  He is an “old soul” and going places!

A candid chat with Mekenna Melvin who plays Col. Casey’s daughter on “Chuck”

In Chuck, Interviews, NiceGirlsTV, TV Watchtower on May 2, 2011 at 2:00 pm

In an exclusive interview with NiceGirlsTV, Mekenna Melvin talked about her super cool role on “Chuck.”  For Mekenna, her favorite part of playing Alex, Col. Casey’s daughter, is how much fun it is getting to know Alex – discovering with each new script what the writers have come up with next; and, for a role that began with a single word in one episode, it quickly morphed into a much broader and intricate part of the show.  In fact, as each day goes by, Alex gets closer and closer to being recruited into her dad’s world, as dating a spy and being the daughter of a spy lends itself well to being involved whether recruited or not.

Mekenna admitted she would love it if Alex dabbled a bit more in the spy-world.  She enthusiastically said, “I would love to be a part of that world! It’s so fun for me, as an actress, to see these scenes being filmed by the rest of the cast. I would love to do those scenes too!”  Thus, she relishes the thought of Alex training to be a spy or helping on missions.  If she had to pick an area of expertise or specialty that Alex would have naturally, Mekenna speculated that Alex would probably be an expert in weapons, like Casey.

Already thinking ahead and picking out an undercover name, Mekenna thought it would be appropriate to use Baby Casey  — a moniker that the “Chuck” fans have already been using – though it would probably blow Casey’s cover.  So, thinking along the lines of something she could see Alex really using, Mekenna picked out the code name “Charging Bull.”  Talk about confident!  Mekenna and her character Alex clearly are both secure in their strength and are willing to take charge as necessary.

Not surprisingly, the one word that Mekenna thinks best describes Alex is “secure” — because, in Alex’s mind, there is no doubt about who she is and, because she knows that, she is secure and confident.  Now that Casey is back in her life and having Morgan on her arm as her doting boyfriend, Alex’s world is complete – especially since Alex’s mom also found out Casey is still alive.  With all the secrets out in the open, Alex’s world only continues to expand and it is incredibly exciting for Mekenna.

Taking about Alex and Morgan’s blossoming relationship on “Chuck,” Mekenna said that the secret of their success as a couple is simple:  they have the same heart and interests.  Mekenna gushed, “What is there not to love?! Morgan is so sweet, honest, earnest and so cute. And Alex’s kind of dorky too  — so she’s that kind of girl.”  Nothing is more attractive than finding your soul-mate and Alex is smart enough to recognize it when she sees it and holds on tight with both hands.

As for the challenges of working on such an action-packed and constantly zany show, Mekenna admitted that because she sees herself predominately as a dramatic actress that she was initially intimated by the idea that they would not find her funny.  But because the entire cast has so much fun together, they merely welcomed her into their fun-filled world with open arms.  The warm welcome was a huge relief and it has encouraged her to meld into the “Chuck” insanity.  She happily shared, “They are all so much fun. It was a huge relief.”

While official word on whether “Chuck” will be renewed for a fifth season won’t be decided for a few more weeks, looming on the horizon for Mekenna are a number of exciting projects.  She admitted that she is not able to discuss projects while they are still being negotiated, but she is incredibly excited about what she will be doing next.

When asked what else besides “Chuck” does she take time out of her busy schedule to enjoy, Mekenna confessed to being a “Nurse Jackie” and “Dexter” fan, and that she tries to watch a little of everything.  In fact, that is her dream:  to do a little bit of everything.  She would love for her own film and television career to be as diversified as possible.  She happily exclaimed, “I’d love to do everything! A small independent film, a big action movie. I’d love to do it all!”

Finally, with a laugh, talking about the one thing that her fans may not yet already know about her, Mekenna revealed that she collects clowns.  Going back to her childhood, she has had a deep fascination for clowns and has amassed quite a collection over the years.  While most people may be afraid of clowns and the masks they wear, the colorful facades invite Mekenna into a world filled with gaiety and masterful illusion.  She celebrates the feeling of joy and mystery they invoke.

Life for Mekenna is constantly evolving and expanding and she embraces the challenge and excitement of it all.  She invites you to join in the journey of her further adventures on “Chuck” and wherever her career takes her next.

Mary McCormack and Fred Weller tease the new season of “In Plain Sight”

In In Plain Sight, Interviews, NiceGirlsTV, TV Watchtower on May 1, 2011 at 3:27 pm

On May 1st, “In Plain Sight” returns with its new season of witness protection challenges and a surprise pregnancy for U.S. Marshal Mary Shannon.  Taking a few moments to chat during a conference call with NiceGirlsTV, co-stars Mary McCormack and Fred Weller provided a fun and insightful look at what to expect as the new season unfolds.

First, talking about what she loved the most about playing her character, Mary said, “I just love the character. . . David Maples, who created the show, just wrote a really great part. I mean Fred’s part is great too, and so is Paul Ben-Victor’s.  .  He just really wrote some three-dimensional characters.  . .  I love them. I love that Mary Shannon’s really good at her job and not so good at her personal life. I like that she’s cynical and sarcastic . . . it’s just fun to play someone so grouchy.” She laughingly added, “It’s sort of refreshing. I can be a little bit grouchy myself so it’s a comfortable fit.”

Then, as a nice twist, the big challenge for Mary this season is dealing with both her own real-life pregnancy and the fact that her character will be pregnancy too.  Mary is not sure how the pregnancy is being written in yet, but speculated, “Mary Shannon . . . you don’t think of her as necessarily maternal so it’s making for some interesting story stuff and character stuff, which I think is really fun to play. . . .To me, I think it’s really interesting to see someone play pregnant who is pregnant. . . .  [and] as a woman I find it refreshing to sort of see someone who’s passionate about their career and then having to try to come to terms with this new area in her life.”  To which Fred impishly added, “You’re every bit as pretty as any fake pregnant lady.”  He also said that he had come up with an idea on how Marshall reacts to Mary’s pregnancy, “I think Marshall has a pregnancy fetish, but they haven’t written that in yet, that I know of.”  To which Mary exclaimed, “I love it! You better tell the writers if you want that written,” and Fred replied, “I tried. I told Cockrell. He says he put it in the file.” Mary thought it would be simply hilarious if the writers actually wrote that in.

Then despite fans clamoring for the baby to be Marshall’s, the identity of Mary’s baby daddy on the show is being delicately handled.  Mary said that because she just found out that she was pregnant, “We’ve just started working it in so we’ll see. I mean I’m not sure where it ends up yet — and it was a lot of news for the writers and they’ve had to act fast. So they’ve been really sweet about it and really adaptable. . . . I think the thought was it might actually provide for — as opposed to just being sort of a wrench — it might actually provide for really an interesting development in Season 4. . . . [and] if the theme of the season is change, it sort of falls right into that.”  She explained, “If Mary’s whole life is changing, her mom is sober, her sister’s engaged and getting married and Marshall is in this relationship which seems to be working and is sort of meaningful — then what’s she left with? And all of a sudden she has this enormous change in her own life too. So I think it’s going to actually be really rich for stories.”  In fact, with this new development, Mary is extremely excited to see for herself what this next season has in store.

Commenting about his character Marshall and the fact that he is in a new relationship and what it means when he discovers his partner is pregnant, Fred noted, “Marshall’s feelings are now inevitably more submerged.”  Jumping in, Mary added, “[But] it’s always there — and this season it is interesting because all the sudden I’m pregnant which is confusing in terms of I think our feelings for each other. And then there’s also his new relationship which throws a wrench in it. And you sort of see all the stuff percolating along the way.  . . We never leave that story all together, because it’s just there. It’s in their friendship and their friendship is so close that it’s obviously somehow more than that all the time.”

Also, from her character’s perspective there is much more going on than just her unexpected pregnancy, Mary elaborated, “She’s sort of confused. . . . like in the first episode you see her expecting her sister to fall right into old patterns and it turns out she really hasn’t. So it sort of kicks off the theme of:  if your whole life is spent taking care of other people, and then those other people randomly either get sober or learn how to take care of themselves — I think her identity’s in question. I mean a big part of her is sort of walking around feeling sort of smug and proud of herself for being the only adult in the room and now she’s not the only adult in the room. So I think it’s interesting. For her it’s a big shift . . . and now on top of it she’s becoming the one thing she never wanted to be, which is a mother. So we’ll see. I don’t know what they have in store. . . But it should be exciting.”

Also, because her character portrays such a tough facade, she is hard to read.  Thus, Mary revealed, “One of my favorite things about the voice-overs at least from my perspective, is that Mary Shannon is a person who doesn’t let people in. . . she barely lets Marshall in and he’s the closest person in her life to her. And so to me it’s opportunity for the audience to just know the real her. . . .I think what’s nice is the audience has a really intimate relationship with her, even though she doesn’t really allow anyone else to. . .  I love those and I think they’re beautifully written.”  Though Fred noted, “There are kind of fewer bits about Marshall’s ability to read Mary, but it’s very much part of their everyday relationship. . . . I think it’s interesting.”

Then looking inside Marshall’s head, Fred tried to explain Marshall’s unique viewpoint on life, by sharing, “I think that he’s a romantic . . .  and I think that he looks at himself and Mary kind of like that famous [Isaiah Berlin] essay about Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, about the humanities divided into the foxes and the hedgehogs — and I think [Marshall] thinks of himself as a hedgehog and Mary as a fox. . . . To elaborate that: hedgehogs define all of existence by one controlling idea and the foxes see existence as a vast variety of controlling ideas — and, for Marshall, to control the idea is love — and Mary has no one controlling idea.”  As he and Mary laughed over this complex analogy, it was agreed that both characters are simply approaching life from different perspectives — which is both interesting and adds a layer of complication to their working relationship.

Finally, when asked what makes the show so popular with the fans as the show enters its fourth season, Fred said, “It’s a great drama with a sense of humor — and I don’t think that’s a very common combination on television.” Mary also added, “Something USA does really well is character stuff, and  . . . I think the character relationships are really rich and fresh and funny.  . .  I love reading the scenes between me and Fred or I love Paul Ben-Victor’s character so much, and so I think that’s a big part of it.  . .  Witness protection just makes for exciting stories and it’s a really rich sort of place to grab stories from . . .  people starting over completely, saying goodbye to their lives before . . .  it never ends in terms of story opportunities.”

So with so many big changes upcoming this season, you will want to see for yourself how it unfolds and works out — and, of course, find out who Mary’s baby daddy is!

Be sure to tune in for the return of “In Plain Sight” tonight.  “In Plain Sight” airs Sunday nights at 10:00 p.m. on USA Network.

Danny Flaherty previews his guest-starring role on “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”

In Interviews, NiceGirlsTV, TV Watchtower on May 1, 2011 at 2:00 pm

In an exclusive interview with NiceGirlsTV, Danny Flaherty talked about what it was like guest-starring in an upcoming episode of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”

In the episode entitled “Rispetto,” Danny portrays Taylor, the son of a notorious “rock star” fashion designer Nyle Brite, played by Jay Mohr, who parties hard and when one of his guests ended up dead, the spotlight is turned on Nyle’s outrageous lifestyle and the affect it has had on his son.

In fact, Danny described his character Taylor as being “depressed about his father’s actions.” Danny explained, “[Taylor] loves his mother very much and wants to protect her from his father.” Taylor is the loving, but conflicted son.  With a father who is fashion’s golden-boy by day, but who had a dark side reserved for his family, Taylor is torn on his role and how to be the good son.  Luckily Danny’s experience was much more fun that the heavy storyline would suggest, and for him, the entire experience was fantastic.

Danny said that he felt fortunate to get the opportunity to audition for the role and is thankful for the chance to work with such great actors as Jay Mohr and Vincent D’Onofrio.  He shared that one of the challenges was “keeping [his] cool around such inspirational people.”  Therefore, just being on set was a learning experience and one that he is grateful for which to have been a part.

Danny also described his co-star Jay Mohr as “hilarious.”  He said, “[Jay] is also very nice.  It was so exciting having the opportunity to work with such a great actor.”

While Danny’s favorite part of the whole experience was just being on the set and seeing how it was all put together – from script to screen – he also loved the cool sets.  He said, “Filming in the police station was definitely my favorite part.  The set was so cool.”

As for what the future holds, Danny is optimistic and said, “I’m super excited for anything that comes my way.  I don’t know what will come in the future, but I can’t wait to see what happens.”  His dream role would to one day get the chance to play Kurt Cobain in a film – particularly because music is such a huge part of his life.  He even laughingly admitted, “I’m always walking around with my headphones blasting.  I love acting so much and when I get the opportunity to do both music and action – it’s the most amazing combination.”

Finally, when asked what one word best describes him, Danny said, “Amazed –  I’m new to the acting world and everything is still so surprising and exciting for me.”  For such a humble and appreciative young actor, the world certainly holds lots of promise.  Be sure to tune-in and catch his latest onscreen performance and share in the remarkable journey ahead.

“Law & Order: Criminal Intent” airs Sundays at 9:00 p.m. on USA Network, and returns for its 10th season on May 1st.

EP David Shore previews the return of Thirteen on “House”

In House, Interviews, NiceGirlsTV, TV Watchtower on April 11, 2011 at 11:47 pm

During a conference call with executive producer David Shore, NiceGirlsTV found out what lies ahead on the murky horizon of “House.”  Now that “House” is on the verge of an 8th season, looking back at how fast is has come and the journey it has taken, David shared how the show has exceeded his expectations “in every single way.”  He elaborated by sharing, “I know this sounds ridiculous, but I wasn’t even imagining 150 episodes.  It’s not like I thought, ‘Could it go 150 episodes?  Maybe, no—‘ or even it’s not even like I thought, ‘could it go 150 episodes?’ and I said ‘no.’  It didn’t even occur to me, which is so bizarre.  The whole thing has just been a wonderful, exciting ride to be able to take this character and explore him for 150 episodes — 151 episodes –152 episodes.  It’s just been amazing.  At the beginning, I just didn’t think there were that many medical maladies we could deal with.  I was hoping we’d get a bit of a niche audience.  I was hoping this character would touch base with enough weirdoes out there, but apparently, there’s a lot more weirdoes out there than I thought.”

Addressing the thorny issue of the Huddy relationship and whether there will be a return to “normalcy” of the prior seasons, David was loathe to describe the upcoming direction of the show as a return to normalcy.  He carefully explained, “I hate the [idea of a] return to normalcy because I was very pleased with what we did with that.  I thought we did something that, in my opinion, could have gone very wrong, and when you’ve got millions of viewers, a number of them are going to believe it did go very wrong.  But we worked very hard to keep House as House, and Cuddy as Cuddy, and have fun with them in a relationship rather than—and never to just—one of the directives was less smiling.  I never wanted to see either of them just content and happy.”  So, while a faction of fans may have reacted negatively to the natural progression of the Huddy relationship, there may still yet be hope for the romantics at heart in the future.

When queried whether there have been roads or storylines that he regrets taking with the show, David candidly admitted, “I don’t lose sleep over it.  That’s not to say I’ve been thrilled with everything I’ve done, but I am pretty good at kind of accepting that that’s what we did, and learning in the sense of going forward hopefully a slightly different perspective.  But, there have been a couple things over the years, and I’d rather not mention them.  I don’t want to feed the fire.”

David was much more forthcoming about the balance between producing and writing and how he prioritizes each.  He explained, “Writing is everything.  I’m very uncomfortable referring to myself as a producer.  I’m a writer.  Obviously, a certain amount of my job is producing.  That’s the part of the job that I always feel like I’m playing hooky when I’m doing that part of the job, because my real job is writing and overseeing the writing and making sure the scripts all rise to the same level that I want them to be at.”

Sharing a bit about where Thirteen (Olivia Wilde) has been since she was last seen on the show, David revealed, “I obviously don’t want to give anything away to the audience before they watch the episode, but it was all about the reason [Thirteen] was in prison more than the fact that she was in prison.”  As he further explained, “There’s obviously a very emotional reason behind it, and a very personal reason behind it.  So we had a wonderful combination dramatically of an ultimately personal reason and a very provocative start to the episode and then a lovely long mystery, so that was it.  We bandied around a lot about ideas . . . but it made a lot of sense.  It told us something about her.  It connected us deeper to her, and it was a lovely little mystery for the episode.”

Just as Thirteen returns, there is the impending exit of Amber Tamblyn’s character, Masters. David would only offer that there is an upcoming Masters-centric episode, which shall explain what lies ahead for her character.  As for Amber, David was enthusiastic as he shared, “[We] loved her.  She’s great.  The plan was never to have her stay forever, but it became very, very tempting –then we did an episode dealing with exactly that.”

With the return of one team member and the door closing on another, Dr. Gregory House’s world is shifting yet again – particularly as he is still reeling from the break up with Cuddy.  So as David admitted, House is looking for “distractions.”  Anything to get his mind off his personal loss.  Whether Thirteen will be a sufficient enough “distraction” or just another blip on House’s myopic-radar is yet to be seen, but David would love to have Olivia back for the next season as well should the show return.

In the ongoing journey of self-discovery, there have been glimpses in to the heart and soul of House, and David is anxious to continue exploring that particular story as the show continues.  He shared, “That is a question that’s been there since day one.  . . .  He is a human being.  He is not an automaton.  . . . [yet we created] a character that’s all about rationality and searching for objective truth.  We were conscious from Day One not to let him fall into a Spock-type of character.  He is a human being.  That is all I’ll say about that.  I hope he’s a human being.  . . . it was important to us that he be multi-dimensional.”    After all, the show is not as much about medical mysteries, as it is about the mystery of House.  Who is the man and where will his journey take him?

While nothing is yet decided about an 8th season, and given the recent news of Robert Sean Leonard’s possible Broadway commitments that may impede with his ability to work on “House,” David was optimistic that it would not be an issue.  He even mentioned, “I’m operating on the assumption that he’s going to be back, and negotiations are ongoing.  We love [Robert], and we value him . . . That relationship [between House and Wilson] is, I think, one of the cornerstones of this show — that male friendship thing is one of the things I’m proudest of on the show, just the whole exploration of male friendship in, I think, a more honest way than a lot of shows, unfortunately, do it.”

As for whether there will be a Season Eight, David was just as cautiously said, “I would be absolutely astounded if there wasn’t.  We are working on the assumption that there will be.  As you all know, there is no deal in place, but negotiations are ongoing and FOX wants to have a Season Eight and NBC Universal wants them to have a Season Eight.  So I fully expect there to be a Season Eight, and we’re proceeding on that basis.”

With so many big relationship changes upcoming in House’s life, there is certain to be some significant surprises, along with a few twists and turns as the remainder of this season plays out.   Fans are not going to want to miss a single second of it!

“House” airs Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. on Fox.

Spotlight on JAYSON BLAIR: The Man Behind Max Owens on “The Hard Times of RJ Berger”

In Interviews, NiceGirlsTV, TV Watchtower on April 10, 2011 at 10:45 pm

The name Jayson Blair is well known to millions of MTV fans as he portrays the infamous Max Owens in the comedy series “The Hard Times of RJ Berger.”  In an exclusive interview with NiceGirlsTV, Jayson shared what makes Max Owens tick and what he would like to see in Max’s future.

While Max Owens is the “jock everyone loves to hate,” to Jayson, Max is a guy who is perhaps a bit misunderstood.  Jayson thinks that because Max acts a bit insane, irrational and has worked diligently to make RJ’s life a living hell; it is just a cover for a guy who is actually insecure under that tough-shell.  He sees Max as a guy trying to live up to the expectations of his peers just to be popular.

Jayson laughingly admitted that playing Max is really easy for him.  He finds the role a lot of fun as he likes to play the role a bit differently — to challenge people’s perceptions of who Max is and why he does the things he does.  Jayson has found that the core of Max is a playful-side.  So Jayson has worked hard to incorporate that playfulness-with-an-edge aspect to make Max a bit more well-rounded.  He has also found that by approaching Max that way it opens the door to a bit more improv in his performance — and he appreciates that kind of freedom to express who he thinks Max is.

The rest of the world may view Max Owens as a jerk or an ass, but in Max’s mind, he sees himself as “Captain Awesome.”  So while playing Max is easy, Jayson’s challenge is finding the heart-of-gold underneath Max’s firm facade.

In fact, that is the secret to the whole show for Jayson:  he sees “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” as having a lot of “heart“.  It may be crazy, rambunctious, and raunchy, but with a glimmer of soulful heart mixed in.

The show also gives Jayson the chance to make fun of his co-stars in such a way that he would normally be afraid to do in real life.  The antics he can get away with as Max is a lot more freeing than he must act within the constraints of his real life, and he finds it freeing and fun to tease his co-workers as their characters on screen.  Thus, he cheekily admitted, playing Max has given him the license to embrace a darker-side and get away with it.

Despite his secret pleasure in playing Max, Jayson was quick to point out that he loves working with his co-stars.  In fact, his co-star Paul Iacono is like a little brother to him in real life since they lived together during the first season of the show.  Jayson also only had great things to share about his other co-stars, Kara Taitz, Amber Lancaster, and Jareb Dauplaise — who he described as the one who never stops making everyone laugh.

Looking toward the future and what Jayson would like to see ahead in Max’s journey, Jayson shared that he would love to see Max delve-deeper into his home life with his parents and try to tap into some inner-growth — to see Max become essentially more human by revealing a bit more of his heart and to show how some of the decisions he makes affect him and haunt him.  It is that kind of peeling back the layers and seeing Max grow that excites Jayson.  “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” may be a comedy, but Jayson is confident that allowing the lens to peer into the depths of Max’s soul would be illuminating.

As for what type of projects Jayson is striving towards in the future, he would love to pursue more independent films and projects that touch upon darker drama.  Some of his favorite films are “21 Grams” and “Lars and The Real Girl,” and the chance to embrace such meaty roles would be the dream of a lifetime.

Jayson noted that his recent role on “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior” has been one of his favorite forays into denser roles and he relishes the chance to do more roles like that.  He is also excited about the Stephen Gaghan pilot “Special Investigations L.A” that he just finished filming.  Gaghan wrote the Oscar winning film ‘Traffic” and the opportunity to work with him has been incredible.

In addition, also during this current hiatus, Jayson is about to start working on a small horror film “Detention of the Dead,” which will be filming in Michigan for the next month or so.

Jayson is ecstatic that he has had such a memorable and rewarding year and the opportunity to play such a diverse palate of roles.  He noted that for him, “the story is more important than booking just a job.”  He has just been lucky enough that so many fun and interesting roles have presented themselves and the timing has worked out.

With ratings for “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” nearly guaranteeing another season, Jayson’s busy schedule will not be easing up anytime soon — but that is exactly the way he likes it.  There is no better way to celebrate life than to embrace everything it offers and Jayson is embracing it all.

Look for a new episode of “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” to air on Monday, April 10th on MTV — and keep an eye on Jayson Blair as his career continues streaking across the Hollywood skyline.  He is an up and coming star to watch!

Christian Slater previews his new comedy series “Breaking In”

In Interviews, NiceGirlsTV, TV Watchtower on April 4, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Debuting his new comedy series “Breaking In,” Christian Slater shared in a conference call with NiceGirlsTV what continues to draw him to such a variety of television roles and his hopes for his new series on Fox.  Playing an independent security consultant who employs a rat-tag group of social manipulators — aka con artists and thieves — in order to test various companies’ security systems, Christian plays Oz – the man behind the curtain.  This is a new role for Christian, whose last two forays into television included the drama series “The Forgotten” (an ex-cop helping track down missing persons) and “My Own Worst Enemy” (a spy living a double-life).

Taking a break from the weighty dramatic fare and opting to stretch his comedic acting chops, Christian heads a cast of entertaining actors, including Bret Harrison (best known for his work on the short-lived series “Reaper”), Alphonso McAuley, Trevor Moore and Odette Annabele – and with a fine guest-starring appearance by Michael Rosenbaum in the pilot as well. Being a half-hour comedy series, “Breaking In” smartly relies on its cast as a source of amusement and lively entertainment.  Each is a force of personality and carry the comedy on a wave of enthusiasm.

Sharing what drew him to the role of Oz, Christian explained that executive producer Doug Robinson had seen some of Christian’s recent comedy work, including appearances on “The Office” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and he presented Christian with the opportunity to create a character from the ground up.  That was appealing to Christian who liked the idea of bringing such a character to life. He revealed, “It was something new — it was something different.  It was something that certainly feels more geared towards my strengths and things that I really do enjoy doing . . . [and] I definitely prefer doing comedy.  I think comedy is vital in our world.  I think it’s very, very important and we need as many excuses to laugh and be jolly at this particular time.”

It also offered another chance to crack into the television world and that appealed as well.  Christian explained, “I like the consistency of it . . . [and] I like the pace of it.  With the first two experiences I had, I really did respond well to the schedule.  It’s a very, very fast moving train.  I don’t like sitting around.  I really like to get in there and do the job and get it done and feel good about it at the end of the day, and that pretty much seems to be the vibe on all the sets that I’ve gotten to be a part of.”

In addition to the chance to do television and comedy, the role was an open arena.  The more layers Christian pulls back, he is discovering what makes Oz tick. Christian shared, “I like the fact that [Oz] is an eight-moves ahead kind of guy . . . he pretty much knows what the outcomes are going to be right from the get-go, which I really appreciated and I like . . . It’s nice to have characters like that on TV.  It makes people feel safe and comfortable — even though it’s a made up character it still makes people feel safe that there’s somebody out there like that, potentially.”  He laughingly added, “I like that he’s in charge.  I like that he likes to have fun, that he doesn’t really take things all that seriously and he’s just kind of a guy—a very mysterious guy, and there’s definitely a lot more going on beneath the surface than he’s revealing.”

While the pilot thrusts the audience right into the middle of Oz’s world without explaining how he got into this particular type of business, the show may slowly reveal Oz’s back-story.  In the pilot, the story plays out through the eyes of Bret Harrison’s character, Cameron, who is reluctantly recruited to work for Oz’s security company.  Christian, trying to explain Oz’s motivation, said, “[Oz] is at a particular moment of need . . . [and] I like the fact that he has the ability to kind of find these little diamonds in the rough –  these people with these great skills that aren’t really using them to their full and utmost potential.  He picks these people, like Cameron’s character who’s a brilliant computer hacker, and really gives him the opportunity to kind of flourish and have fun and sort of point his skills in a particular direction where they could have gone down a darker path.  Now he’s getting the opportunity to break the law, legally.”

As for Oz’s story, well, that remains a mystery for now as Christian teased, “Of course [executive producer Adam Goldberg] made me swear to secrecy about it all so I can’t say anything really about Oz’s true past but it certainly gripped me and I found it very interesting.”

Also adding another layer of insight into why he chose to play Oz, Christian admitted, “I love characters with edge –  I love characters that are a little bit more dangerous, a little bit unpredictable.  I think they’re just fun to play.  They’re definitely more interesting than just your standard, run-of-the-mill action-y type hero.  I love just being these guys that are a little offbeat and a little twisted, and just a little dangerous.”  In fact, he sees Oz as, “A guy who, at times, has to rule with a bit of an iron fist because he is dealing with a large group of misfits that he’s assembled, but my personal feeling is that he’s definitely got a heart of gold.  I think he loves everyone that he’s chosen to surround himself with.”

When it was noted that there is a significant piece of sci-fi history showcased in the pilot, namely Captain Kirk’s chair from “Star Trek,” Christian confessed, “A buddy of mine had gotten me that chair for a birthday present about a year ago, so it was really just sitting in my house and I really liked it and I just thought this chair would represent, in a way, who this Oz character is.”  He further explained, “Oz is definitely the captain of this particular ship.  It does have a throne-like quality and it also has a little bit of a throwback-type quality as well.  I’m a fairly eccentric character myself and the fact that these guys were so open to hiring people and including a lot of their own personal eccentricities into the characters was thrilling.”

Thus, after reading the script and sitting down with the producers, Christian admitted that his reaction was along the lines of, “Oh boy —  well this is pretty exciting.  If we can actually pull off getting the Captain Kirk chair in the show that would be wondrous!”

Another personal item that Christian brought to the set is the book that sits beside the Captain Kirk chair, which he sheepishly admitted was a prop he stole from one of his earlier films, “The Name of the Rose.”  Like everything on the show, it too has Easter-egg significance, Christian explained, and more will be revealed about that particular item as well.

While the show has only filmed 7 episodes, before its first season finale airs on May 18th, each of the characters on “Breaking In” will be explored in order to give the audience insight into who each is and why they were recruited to be a part of Oz’s special team. Christian added, “It’s very much like Star Trek: they had a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds – [and] Oz has a five-year plan and he’s hired each of these people for very specific reasons.”

Talking about his comedic co-stars, Bret Harrison and Alphonso McAuley, Christian was effusive in complimenting them, saying, “I definitely felt like [Bret and Alphonso] were setting the bar very, very high — and if I didn’t show up and be as prepared as I could possibly be then I would definitely fall behind with the timing and the comic genius that they possess.”

Finally, reflecting back on his lengthy and varied career, Christian admitted that this role may be the zaniest he has portrayed yet, explaining, “When I started my career I definitely did movies like Heathers, which was certainly a black comedy and very, very twisted in a lot of ways.  So, in a certain respect this is a little bit of a nod and a wink to, I think, some of the earlier things that I started off doing.”

But, for right now, Christian is pleased with this great opportunity to show-off his comedy chops and have a bit of fun playing Oz.  He happily shared, “I’m so happy and proud with the work everybody’s been doing and I’m telling you it just gets nuttier. . .  It gets crazy.  There’s a lot more going on beneath the surface as well.”

With that last bit of infectious enthusiasm, you are invited to tune-in for “Breaking In’s” debut episode on Wednesday, April 6th at 9:30 p.m., following “American Idol,” on Fox.
